Anton was firm that even if the person was a family member, Anton is still responsible for the patient’s care. Therefore, he explained that he has to do what is best for the patient.
The very first interaction that I saw between Anton and the patient, I immediately saw that he was different from other nurses that I’ve worked with before. He greeted the patient as if they were a close friend that he has not seen in a long time. The patient was only minimally responsive, but he talked to them as if she was walking and talking. Anton took care of the patient and treated her as if she were a family member. He made sure that there were no creases on the bed and the incontinence pad. Anton always complimented the patient on how good she looked, which I saw made the patient smile. He explained to me that no matter who the patient is, he always makes sure that he treats them as if they were a member of his family because he expects to be treated the same way he treats his patients. Later that same day, when the patient’s son was having the patient do FaceTime with an estranged brother, Anton noticed that this was making the patient uncomfortable. She started going into atrial fibrillation. Upon noticing this, Anton immediately sprang into action and started the patient on anti-arrhythmic medication. He also gave the patient some anxiety medication to calm her down. Anton asked the family member if he could step out for now, so that the patient can rest. Anton was firm that even if the person was a family member, Anton is still responsible for the patient’s care. Therefore, he explained that he has to do what is best for the patient. After getting the patient to calm down, he made sure she was clean, made sure that the sheets were not creased all the while still treating the patient as if she was a member of his own family. I have been a nurse for 13 years, but I have never seen a nurse who was that adamant about being an advocate for their patient. I believe Anton is a DAISY Nurse because he exemplifies what it is to be a nurse not only with critical thinking but also with how he treats his patients with dignity and care!
