April 2026 Honoree
Aolani Cahue, MSN, RN, MEDSURG-BC
I would like to nominate Aolani Cahue for the DAISY Award for her outstanding advocacy, compassion, and commitment to quality patient care.
During her rounds, Aolani encountered a patient who was already on her radar and quickly recognized the need for further intervention. She appropriately escalated her concerns to leadership and circled back with the care team on the unit. Despite limited resolution and ongoing gaps in physician communication, Aolani remained persistent and focused on doing what was best for the patient.
Recognizing that the patient’s voice had not been fully heard, Aolani took the time to sit with him and ask how she could help meet his needs. During this conversation, the patient was open and transparent, clarifying that he was not refusing care as previously assumed—he simply wanted help and to be understood. This interaction demonstrated Aolani’s ability to look beyond assumptions and truly listen to her patient.
Following this, Aolani continued to advocate for the patient by closing communication gaps, appropriately escalating concerns, and ensuring closed-loop communication across the care team. Her actions directly supported patient-centered care, safety, and a positive patient experience.
In addition to this specific situation, Aolani consistently demonstrates excellence in her daily work preventing CAUTI infections. She partners effectively with teammates, seeks out the most up-to-date evidence-based practices, and continuously looks for ways to improve outcomes. Her ability to create a very thorough spreadsheet in a couple of minutes is her superpower. She is also incredibly creative and intentional about recognizing and celebrating her team, frequently rounding on teammates she believes will positively impact bedside care.
Aolani’s compassion, accountability, teamwork, and dedication to quality care truly embody the values of the DAISY Award. Her commitment to advocating for patients and supporting her colleagues does not go unnoticed and deserves recognition.
Aolani, please continue the incredible work you do and the positive impact you make on our patients and teams every day.
