In the midst of such a tragedy, her compassion and caring showed through
We had a patient on our unit and while he was here, his brother was brought in as a trauma after being in an accident involving his tractor. His brother was in the ICU and it was determined that he would not make it and he was kept alive to become an organ donor. The family, along with their preacher, were meeting in the patient's brother's room at 1915 prior to the Honor Walk that was occurring at 2000. April was Charge that day and she coordinated all of the care to ensure that he could be there. She contacted staffing (the patient had to be monitored if he left our floor), and made arrangements through staffing, to have a nurse come to our floor to take him there so that he could be with this family during this difficult time. Not only did she arrange this but, she also volunteered to stay over if staffing did not have anyone extra to send, and said that she would take the patient to the ICU to make sure that he could be with his family and see his brother one last time. In the midst of such a tragedy, her compassion and caring showed through to ensure that these 2 brothers were able to say their final goodbyes.
