It was an ordinary day when April came to work in mid-December 2016. On this shift, she was the receiving nurse for three children who had been starved and horrifically abused. April cared for these children along with the Children and Youth Services worker. They had nowhere to go and stayed in the Emergency Department in limbo for several days. When April returned to work on December 22nd, she informed the case worker that she had spoken with her husband and she would take the three children. Within hours, she was approved. April left work on December 22nd with two of the three children. The other would join her in January after recovering from a stay in the intensive care unit. It has been a long road for April. She took FMLA to acclimate the children into life as a family and is set to adopt all children in November 2017 if all goes well.
