Her dedication, compassion, and leadership have made a lasting impact on our team and our patients.
It is an absolute honor to nominate April for the DAISY Award. She is the embodiment of what nursing is meant to be: selfless, compassionate, and unwavering in her commitment not only to her patients but to the teams she so willingly supports. April consistently goes above and beyond, often answering calls for help from our Emergency Department despite not being employed there. Time and time again, when our team is in need, during some of our most challenging and high-acuity moments, April shows up. And she doesn't just show up physically; she brings with her a How can I help? mindset, a calm presence, a smile, and a positivity that immediately lifts those around her.

On one particular night, our ED was overwhelmed, with multiple critical patients, a surge in arrivals, and a team stretched thin. April responded without hesitation. Among the chaos was a young patient with a devastating brain bleed who required intubation and emergent transfer. He had no family present, and time was critical. After exhausting all options to secure transport, the Coast Guard agreed to fly the patient, but only if a nurse could accompany him. Without pause, April stepped forward. She volunteered to fly with the patient to Savannah, managing a critically ill, ventilated patient mid-flight, handling the ventilator, cardiac monitor, and all necessary equipment, while also coordinating her own return. This was not a simple or routine transport; it was one of the most complex and high-risk situations we've faced. Yet April never complained. She didn't hesitate. She simply did what she always does: she put the patient first. Throughout the flight, she provided updates to the team.

Upon landing, she ensured a thorough and safe handoff. And her care did not stop there. In the days that followed, she continued to check on this patient, calling and texting for updates. When we learned he was awake and responding, we cried. That is not just nursing. That is a servant's heart at its finest. This story is just one example of the countless ways April shows up for others. She is dependable, compassionate, and deeply committed to doing what is right, no matter how difficult or inconvenient. She represents the very best of our profession and sets the standard for what it means to truly care. April is not only deserving of the DAISY Award, she is the kind of nurse we should all strive to be.

Where do I begin? As a team member who has had the privilege of working alongside Mrs. April Harper, I have witnessed her tireless dedication not only to patient care but also to the people she leads and supports every day. During the absence of our charge nurse, Mrs. Harper stepped into the role without hesitation, leading with confidence, compassion, and integrity. Her presence brings calm in moments of chaos and reassurance when it is needed the most. Mrs. Harper wears many hats throughout the hospital, serving as House Supervisor, OB nurse, Cath Lab nurse, and ER nurse. In every role, she leads by example, consistently going above and beyond for both patients and staff. She is the heart of our team, the person whom many, including doctors, turn to for guidance, encouragement, and strength. Many of us refer to her as the "mom" of the team because she genuinely looks after everyone.

One moment that truly reflects her character was when a patient was extremely anxious about an upcoming heart procedure. Mrs. Harper took the time to sit with her, ease her fears, and provide the emotional support she desperately needed. That level of care cannot be taught; it comes from the heart. Even in her personal life, Mrs. Harper exemplifies selflessness. While caring for her ill father-in-law in his final days, she continued to work her shifts, pick up additional coverage, and support her coworkers without complaint. She often finishes one role, only to step immediately into another. Never seeking recognition. Mrs. Harper is always just a call away, ready to lead, support, and serve in whatever capacity is needed. Her dedication, compassion, and leadership have made a lasting impact on our team and our patients. For these reasons, and so many more, I am honored to nominate Mrs. Harper for this exceptional award.
