My grandfather was recently a patient in the ICU. The nurses treated him with such kindness, compassion, and dignity that it felt like he was more than just another patient. While on the unit my grandfather was accompanied by many members of his family. Great care was taken to keep our family informed and educated about my grandfather's care. For as long as I can remember, my grandfather has had cardiac problems. H was admitted for a condition in his legs and congestive heart failure. His heart was very weak. During his ICU stay, he went unresponsive and coded multiple times. The experience and skill of the staff were impressive. In particular, April demonstrated the quick thinking and decisive action one would hope for in such a critical situation. She is a true asset to the VAMC and an angel in the eyes of my family. April traveled with AMR on the ground transfer to Denver. Lights and sirens, snow still on the roads, and a very unstable patient, they delivered my grandfather alive to the University of Colorado Hospital. Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away while in Denver, but not without one hell of a final fighting chance from the men and women serving at the Cheyenne VAMC.
