“April took it upon herself to watch a Whipple surgery and educate herself further about this complicated procedure. She found there to be a general lack of knowledge about the drains and tubes related to this surgery which affected the knowledge and comfort level of the patients. She became very passionate about not only educating other nurses, including nurses from outside facilities, but also her patients. April developed the “Whipple Surgery & Recovery Handbook” for our patients to be given upon diagnosis. April follows up with Whipple patients to make sure they understand their tubes and drains and their plan of care while in the hospital. She plans to keep spreading knowledge and awareness about pancreatic cancer to as many people as possible. She feels it is her duty to find ways to help our patients further and look for research opportunities.”
