Tell us why this nurse is excellent: April is committed to the patients and families she works with on a daily basis. She goes above and beyond their expectations for care. Whenever she sees an issue with the patient or family, she ensures that it is resolved prior to their discharge. This can be a challenge in the peri-operative setting due to the brief amount of time to accomplish tasks.
How does this nurse make a special connection with your family and child?: April always has an up beat, cheerful manner. This approach with her patients and families puts them at ease during the time she cares for them. She easily picks up on situations that need intervention and follows through on a resolution.
Share examples of how the nurse educates your family and child: April works in all three peri-operative areas. This gives her a global perspective of the entire peri-operative experience for the families. She has knowledge of what occurs in each phase of the peri-operative process and is able to share this information with the patients and families. April utilizes not only her nursing knowledge but incorporates her own personal experience to help families with the home care of their child post-operatively. An example is when she cares for a patient that has had their tonsil removed. April experienced the same surgery not too many years ago. She is able to bring unique insight to the families on the challenges and experiences they may expect at home.
Describe a situation during which this nurse made your family and child feel comfortable: April was admitting a seven week old infant with an hemangioma on their lip and was schedule to have laser treatment. The mom was young and had some social economical issues. The infant was not feeding well due to the size of the hemangioma. The mom expressed concerns with the current primary care physician her child was seeing. Due to transportation issues, she was not able to seek out a new primary care physican. Through additional dialogue and discussion with the mom a plan of care was developed. Social services was contacted to assist mom with the health care needs of her child decreasing her stress level.
Tell us how this nurse includes your family and child in the planning of their care: There was a child who was brought to Liberty for a dental procedure. The child was with the grandfather, the grandmother currently had custody of the child. April, along with peer in Same Day Surgery had a feeling that something was not right. There was a case worker assigned to the child due to custody issues between the grandmother and grandfather who were divorcing. Going with this feeling, April contacted Social Services even though there was a case worker already involved. Social service came and spoke to the grandfather and the child. With this further investigation, information was gathered and there had been an abuse claim with this child but no follow up (the grandmother's boyfriend was known sex offender). As a result of April's dedication to pursue this issue and contact social service, the child was assigned a new case worker and scheduled for an evaluation at the Mayerson Center.
