April 2026 Honoree
April Wheeler, RN
April is the definition of a DAISY Nurse: compassionate, attentive, responsive, intelligent, and going above and beyond to ensure excellent Veteran care. She didn't just care for a patient; she cared for a family. Her guidance, empathy, and proactive advocacy made a profound difference during our darkest hours. She demonstrated extraordinary compassion from the moment we met. She recognized that this was a deeply difficult time for both my husband and me. She didn't just treat him as a patient; she treated us as a family in need of healing, providing a level of emotional support that turned a frightening experience into a manageable one.
April took full ownership of my husband’s care and our experience on the unit. She ensured that every procedure and unit-specific protocol was explained to me in detail. By setting clear expectations before I even arrived on the unit, she eliminated the stress of the unknown and held herself to the highest standard of professional excellence.
April gently educated me on the importance of stepping back from my professional role so that I could simply be a "loved one." This shift allowed me to focus on my husband’s recovery and my own well-being, a gift I didn't realize I needed. Her integrity shone through her advocacy. She went above and beyond her basic duties to ensure our needs were met. She took the initiative to make arrangements for special orders, ensuring I could visit him after my tour hours. She followed through on every promise she made.
The clinical care she provided to my husband was top tier, but her excellence extended to her communication. Her ability to balance complex medical tasks with the "human" side of nursing—educating, planning, and comforting—is a testament to her skill and dedication to the nursing profession. She was incredibly generous with her time and spirit. She chose to invest extra energy into our situation, making sure I had the awareness and tools necessary to navigate the unit. Her willingness to go the extra mile to accommodate our visiting needs showed a selfless heart that truly embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award.
