She never rushed him or brushed past his struggle to communicate — instead, she slowed down and found ways to connect with him that maintained his dignity and comfort.
I would like to nominate an exceptional Emergency Department RN who made a profound impact on my family during a very difficult and emotional time. From the moment we arrived in the ED, this nurse was a calm, steady presence in the middle of chaos. She consistently took the time to explain everything that was happening with my father’s care — not just to us, but with us. She broke down the medical terminology and kept us informed at every turn. What stood out most, though, was the compassion behind every word and action. As my father began to experience more confusion and difficulty expressing himself, she met him with remarkable patience and gentleness. She never rushed him or brushed past his struggle to communicate — instead, she slowed down and found ways to connect with him that maintained his dignity and comfort. Her sensitivity and respect for him in those vulnerable moments were deeply moving. She was also incredible with my mother, who has dementia and used to work in healthcare as a hospital tech. My mom was desperate to help and feel useful, and this nurse welcomed her into the process with warmth and grace. She found small but meaningful tasks for my mom to do, helping her feel included and purposeful in the midst of overwhelming uncertainty. That act of kindness alone gave my mom peace and pride — something we didn’t even realize we needed until it happened. This nurse didn’t just follow the plan of care — she questioned it when she saw subtle but serious changes in my dad’s condition. She voiced her concerns to the provider team, advocated for him, and because of her attentiveness and initiative, the medical team adjusted his treatment. Her advocacy made a difference, not only clinically but emotionally for our family, knowing someone was looking out for him with such dedication. To call her a blessing feels like an understatement. She embodied the heart of nursing — skill, compassion, intuition, and selflessness — and we will never forget her. In a world where care can sometimes feel rushed or impersonal, she reminded us of the power of presence and human connection. She is exactly the kind of nurse the DAISY Award was made for.
