Ari was taking care of a young patient (20 years old), who was in labor with her first child. Ari spent over 2 hours with this patient as she pushed and pushed. Suddenly, the infant's heartrate skyrocketed and wouldn't come down. So, an emergency C-section was ordered. The baby was in distress. This is where I got to see Ari in action. I was with the NICU nurse assisting the father back to the operating room. Meanwhile, Ari could see the visible panic in her patient's eyes. Her eyes were full of tears ready to burst. The nurses were rushing around paying no mind to this young girl, because they were trying to save the baby. Ari saw this opportunity and grabbed her patient's hand. The girl squeezed extremely hard and the tears trickled down her face. Ari was there for her when no one else could be. Ari kept the mom calm, until the father was brought into the room to be with her. I think this was an amazing example of a student filling a major need for her patient. This soon-to-be exhausted mother just needed someone to acknowledge her fear, and Ari saw that and met her need with grace. Ari told me about this interaction later in the OR and it almost brought me to tears. And because she's so humble, she wouldn't share this story with our instructor or peers. So I did! Because I wanted everyone to know the great people we have to work with in our program! I'm excited to see what a great nurse Ari will be!
