Arica Vaughn
It is my distinct privilege to recognize Arica Vaughan for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students.
Throughout her clinical rotations, Arica has consistently demonstrated a profound capacity for compassion, clinical excellence, and patient advocacy that goes far beyond the expectations of a student nurse. She serves as an exceptional role model for the nursing profession.
Arica's clinical acumen and ability to remain calm under pressure were recently demonstrated during a life-threatening medical emergency. While caring for a patient, she recognized the subtle signs of acute chest pain. Understanding the gravity of the situation, Arica immediately notified the primary nurse and clinical instructor, and seamlessly assisted the team in implementing the chest pain protocol.
Her sharp assessment skills and swift, decisive actions directly contributed to identifying an active myocardial infarction (MI) and ultimately helped save the patient’s life.
Following this event, Arica received highly positive feedback from the primary nurse, the provider, and the patient's family, all of whom commended her composed demeanor and professional execution under pressure.
Equally impressive is Arica’s dedication to holistic, empathetic care and patient advocacy. On another occasion, she was assigned to a patient with a substance abuse disorder who was scheduled for discharge but expressed a deep sense of hopelessness and lack of readiness to leave.
Through active listening and the expert use of therapeutic communication, Arica built a strong rapport with the patient. She uncovered that the patient was experiencing suicidal ideation and had no safe discharge plan, facing imminent homelessness.
Recognizing the severity of the patient’s despair, Arica became a steadfast advocate for him, bringing the situation to the immediate attention of the nurse and provider. Thanks to her intervention and advocacy, the patient was successfully and voluntarily committed to a rehabilitation facility.
The patient was profoundly grateful, thanking Arica profusely and stating that she was the only person who had truly cared enough to listen to him. Had it not been for Arica's compassionate intervention, this vulnerable patient would have been discharged into a dangerous situation with likely tragic consequences.
Arica Vaughan embodies the art of caring while mastering the science of nursing. She uses her voice to protect the most vulnerable, and her calm, empathetic approach makes a remarkable difference in the lives of her patients and their families. She is highly deserving of this recognition.
