December 2023 Honoree
Arnel Barcena, BSN, RN
I went up to 3 East with a diagnosis of right leg cellulitis and I was positive for COVID-19, so I figured I would be in an isolation room. At the end of the hallway, my nurse awaited, "I am Arnel, your nurse" he said simply. Fully dressed in an N95 mask, gown, and gloves, he wheeled me into my room and said, "I will be giving you your dinner and I need to check your blood sugar prior to that." I was happy, like I finally hit home, someone I can relate with. So, I said, "Hi, hello, where are you from? You made me feel like a person again." I could see respect, caring, and detailed attention to what he was saying and doing. Mind you, we patiently watched Arnel like a hawk with whatever he was doing around us. Arnel told me, "We are going for our Magnet status." I have worked at hospitals with Magnet status since the 2000s and know how good Magnet nurses are. Arnel made me very comfortable and at ease, and my room was like a 5-star hotel accommodation. I even cried because I felt so grateful I had Arnel to take care of me. Thank you!
Thank you, Arnel, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
