Artur Jorge Dias Carvalhinho, RN
I am pleased to introduce Artur Jorge Dias Carvalhinho, Nurse Manager of the Home Hospitalization Unit at the Local Health Unit of Coimbra, Portugal. Artur’s mission in 2024 was to transform the Home Hospitalization Unit into a cutting-edge, national reference structure for healthcare provision. The central challenge was ambitious: move beyond operational management and implement a strategic model that maximized the service's efficiency, quality, and sustainability, delivering exceptional, quantifiable performance. The ultimate goal was to prove that the unit deserved institutional autonomy and recognition by creating an Integrated Responsibility Center. This new functional reorganization allows salary supplements for all involved professionals upon achieving objectives, thereby stimulating commitment and dedication. It was necessary to ensure maximum capacity utilization and increase production compared to the national average, while also securing clinical excellence and promoting humanization and inclusion at home.
Artur led the transformation through a multifaceted approach that included: The “Elderly Health Management Team” and “Move More at Home” both finalists of the Program of the Portuguese Association for Integrated Care. Artur currently leads the working group to create Increased Competence in Home Hospitalization Nursing within the Order of Nurses, elevating national recognition. The results achieved under his leadership were irrefutable proof of the project's merit.
His active leadership in the qualification and national recognition of Home Hospitalization Nursing resulted in institutional recognition and a professional legacy. He is also in the final stages of completing a book, “Stories from Home,” that compiles true stories describing the humanization, importance, and added value of this type of care. He coordinates a working group to propose recognizing Home Hospitalization Nursing as an Increased Competence in Nursing to the Order of Nurses.
Artur proved that combining a management vision with clinical excellence and humanization makes it possible to create performance that institutions recognize and reward with autonomy and resources. His journey shows that the Nurse Manager, with the right competence and focus, is not just an administrator but a visionary leader capable of redefining standards of quality, efficiency, and the profession's future in the healthcare landscape.
