She saw someone in need and helped without hesitation. Though it was only a few dollars for her, it made a difference to someone who otherwise would have gone without.
We are caring for a patient who is unfortunately homeless and without insurance or means to afford follow up care once he leaves our hospital. We are doing the best we can to provide him with the resources he needs, but one nurse went above and beyond without ask of recognition. Arvelta, while educating him on his discharge plan and asking his needs, discovered that this patient could not pay for his dose of home antibiotic and took it upon herself to cover the cost out of her own pocket. She saw someone in need and helped without hesitation. Though it was only a few dollars for her, it made a difference to someone who otherwise would have gone without. We need more nurses like Arvelta who will take the time to listen and connect with their patients.

Thank you for your compassion and not losing sight of the patient while managing a difficult situation. You took the time to download an app displaying all of the different military planes as a way to calm a very confused/restless patient with 30 years of military service. You truly went above and beyond and the family was so grateful for your time spent with their loved one. They recalled conversations with the patient discussing the many different military planes and your ability to really connect with him. Despite a very difficult situation, just speaking about you and your interactions brought a smile to the family's face.

This was my second time on the 2nd Floor South. Ms. Arvelta was my nurse last time, but I didn't get a chance to nominate her then. Ms. Arvelta is ALWAYS polite, understanding, relatable, and attentive. She explains everything to me, answers any questions my family has, and advocates for me between the doctors or other medical staff. She treats me like I'm part of her family. Her care is exceptional, and I am forever grateful to her and for her.
