A letter to Ashanti Dean:
It has been nine days since I was in the hospital delivering my tiny baby girl. I had several nurses and doctors the two days I was in the hospital but the only person that really sticks out from my experience is you. I had to be induced and my boyfriend wasn't able to be there for me other than through the phone because he was on call and Sinai was not within the 50 mile radius of his work and we weren't family so it couldn't be considered family emergency. I didn't want my mom in the room because we do not get along the greatest and frankly I didn't want her thinking terrible about my boyfriend because he couldn't be there. So instead I had the siblings of my boyfriend in the room with me for support, and I had you.
I was terrified of what was happening; I hated the fact that the one person I needed more than anything to be there could not legally be there. I was a mess but tried my best to hold it altogether. You were constantly checking in on me and making sure I was ok and not only that I was ok but that everyone that was coming in and out of my room was alright as well. Medically you were wonderful, even if I delivered way too quickly for an epidural or even for the doctors to be in the room (OOPS!), but emotionally you were even better. You never judged me for the decisions I was making and instead you stood behind me on the decisions whether it was when I would let my mom into the room or what and when to take the medicines.
Thanks to you I was able to relatively comfortably have an extremely quick delivery but more than that I was able to hold onto my little girl for that hour and a half that her little heart was able to sustain itself.
Anyway I wanted to write a thank you letter but I am really not good at them because I am really not good at saying what I would like to say. And while me, my little one and my family are probably a distant memory for you at this point in time you will never be lost in our memory. Everyone wants to thank you for what you did keeping us happy and comfortable. You went way above the call of duty for a nurse. I hope that every patient that comes into Sinai with as sad a story as mine is lucky enough to get a small ray of sunshine, by having you are their nurse. Thank you for all you've done; you are an amazing person that I can never thank enough.
