I was admitted to the labor and delivery floor for the birth of my son. During my pregnancy, I had felt nothing more than alone. I felt no one understood my feelings or emotions due to my son being diagnosed with Edward Syndrome. With this diagnosis, he would not survive birth, ultimately being stillborn. Upon being admitted, I was greeted by various nurses but continued to be unsettled by what was to come. That evening during shift change I was greeted by Mrs. Ashley. Walking into my room she greeted me a smile and spoke with me about my labor plan and what was to come. At this moment, I was unsure whether I would want to hold my son due to the syndrome and not knowing what he would look like. During the hours of her shift Mrs. Ashley would express the utmost compassion towards me and my husband speaking with us about her own experience of losing her child C. You see, Ashley treated me more like a person and not just a patient. She spoke of C with such charisma that just melted your heart. She made me feel as if I was not alone and listened to all my concerns. She let me know I would have a brighter day. She hugged me and spoke with such compassion that gave me not only courage for my labor but peace of mind that I would overcome this obstacle that I was facing. She also gave me the courage to hold my baby, which I will forever cherish. Because of her, I was able to have the faith I needed to love my precious baby, and see his face, which will forever be etched in my mind and heart.
