When my Grandma came into A&E, she was very quickly palliated and it was decided she was too unstable to move; therefore she remained in a cubicle until her death.
Ashley came on shift and didn't ask what was going on like all the other members of the MDT, he already knew so the nursing care was seamless. He provided consistency of care by remaining Grandma's nurse throughout his shift.
He was not only Grandma's nurse but ours as well. Her 3 children, their husbands, and wives and I were also present. He was attentive without being intrusive and anticipated Grandma's and our needs in advance of our asking.
Ashley kept us updated through Grandma's last hours and delivered difficult news in a pragmatic yet caring way so we could be realistic about what was to happen.
He stayed beyond his shift so he could be the one to wash and prepare Grandma to be moved to a quiet room so he didn't have to hand us or Grandma over to unfamiliar staff.
His calmness, knowledge, and communication skills were outstanding and he treated Grandma with respect and as part of our family still. Despite being in a busy census, he gave us all the time we needed and Grandma a dignified death.
I work in Accident & Emergency and know the pressures of this environment, he is an asset to your Trust and is everything and more a nurse embodies.
On behalf of me, my family and my Grandma, thank you to Ashley.
