He wanted me to know just how highly he thought of Ashley and her wonderful nursing care. Unfortunately, the patient was never able to recognize Ashley the way he wanted.
On behalf of a patient who never got the chance:
Postoperatively, the patient was admitted to the ICU. He struggled with pain control since his arrival. Ashley went above and beyond to ensure the patient got some relief. After multiple phone calls to physicians, and much attentiveness to the patient, she was finally able to get him comfortable. The patient requested to see the charge nurse and started the conversation by stating he had family members in healthcare. His wife was an NP and his mother was a nurse for a significant amount of time. He continued by saying "Ashley is wonderful. Since she's gotten here, she's been very attentive and worked very hard to help manage my pain." He said oftentimes nurses are criticized or told the negative things, but never enough positive. He wanted me to know just how highly he thought of Ashley and her wonderful nursing care. He asked if there was something he could do to recognize Ashley so others would know what a wonderful nurse he thought she was. I told him about The DAISY Award, which he wanted to fill out for her. Unfortunately, the patient was never able to recognize Ashley the way he wanted.
Therefore, I felt it was my duty to carry out his wishes and acknowledge Ashley for her extraordinary patient care. It was very evident how much it meant to him. Thank you, Ashley, for being such a patient advocate and providing such wonderful care to our critical care patients.
May he rest in peace!
