In the early morning hours, my great niece began pre-term labor. Labor was initially stopped with medications and mom and baby were considered stable. With my great niece seemingly stable and resting, the family left the bedside to take care of other family needs, with the intent to return after. Unfortunately, labor again started, and her water broke. Her nurse, Ashley, called family to come back to the hospital and stayed with my niece throughout her delivery. Ashley coached her and soothed her, providing much-needed encouragement and care in a calming manner, knowing it was too soon for the outcome most expect when delivering their baby.

Ashley helped my great niece through her most difficult time as she delivered her angel far too soon. My great-niece was blessed with her angel for almost 2 hours before she took her last breath. She felt her grasp her finger, watched her suckling motions, and held her close. My niece was able to hold her first grandbaby, and my sister was able to hold her first great grandbaby. 

Sunday, we had a memorial for our little firecracker. The repeated sentiment was how incredibly wonderful her nurse, Ashley Dougherty, was the entire time. My niece stated, "She is probably the best nurse Chester County Hospital has, and she is the kind of nurse I hope I am someday." 

The consistent praises of her caring nature were heartfelt and sincere. It is for her kindness, compassion, strength, and empathy that I submit this nomination for a DAISY Award to Ashley Dougherty. She is a clear representation of the kind of care we all should strive to provide and was a true blessing to my family members in their time of darkness and need. My family will often think of Ashley, fondly remember her kindness and strength, and always pray for her well-being.
