In a year that has been filled with so many obstacles for friends and family of patients, Ashley was determined to find a way to help a young soldier connect with his grandmother, who was a patient in Floyd Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit.
A day or so after the patient's critical condition had declined rapidly, she answered a phone call from a tearful young soldier stationed in Texas seeking information about the patient. The patient was his grandmother, and she had raised him as her own.
The soldier didn't know the process for getting emergency family leave, and he didn't have a plan to get him to Rome, even if he could get permission to come.
Ashley quickly took action. She made multiple calls, finding the appropriate people who could give our patient's grandson permission to leave his base and visit her. Upon learning that he didn't have transportation to Rome, she asked for potential travel dates, researched flights and plane tickets. With that information secure, she learned that the young man didn't have the funds to purchase a ticket. Once again, she jumped to action and found resources to help him secure an airplane ticket.
A few days later, the young soldier was at his grandmother's bedside, whispering his last goodbyes to the woman who had nurtured and cared for him.
Ashley is a compassionate and skillful nurse who is known for taking action when it is needed. As a nurse, she goes above and beyond to ensure our patients get the best care possible. If she is on another floor when an alarm sounds, she always responds to see if she can help. She provides comfort and a listening ear not only to patients but to her co-workers as well, and she is an advocate for everyone around her.
