August 2026 Honoree
Ashley Gorby, RN
I would like to commend Ashley Gorby for the exceptional compassion, advocacy, and respect she showed to a postpartum patient during a frightening and emotional experience.
The patient initially came to the Emergency Department around 3 a.m. for vaginal bleeding, approximately two months postpartum. She was assessed and discharged but returned around 6 a.m. with hypotension and significant bleeding. Understandably, the patient was scared, upset, and angry when she came back.
Ashley immediately recognized that this patient needed not only medical care, but also reassurance, emotional support, and someone willing to truly listen. She took the time to sit with the patient, validate her concerns, and help her feel safe and comfortable during a very vulnerable moment. Ashley remained calm, respectful, and compassionate, even while the patient was understandably overwhelmed.
Ashley also went above and beyond to advocate for the patient’s needs. She contacted OB to obtain a bassinet and supplies to help make the patient's stay easier while she was in the hospital. She also reached out to Patient Experience so they could speak with the patient and help address her concerns.
By the time Ashley left for the day, the patient was in tears, and it was obvious she had formed a meaningful bond with Ashley. What started as a situation filled with fear and frustration became one where the patient felt heard, supported, and cared for.
Ashley treated this patient with dignity, respect, and kindness. She advocated for her needs, helped restore trust, and showed exactly what it means to provide compassionate nursing care. Ashley's actions made a lasting impact on this patient.
