Ashley consistently displays a high level of motivation and enthusiasm to achieve better outcomes for process improvements for staff and patients.
Ashley is the Unit Nurse Manager for 5Tele and demonstrates excellent and professional leadership skills. To pick just one situation in which Ashley demonstrates above-average leadership skills is impossible. Each shift, Ashley listens to all staff members and addresses all needs without fail. If Ashley cannot personally resolve an issue, she will contact any and every resource possible to ensure needs are not left unmet. Ashley communicates with staff effectively and appropriately. Ashley handles stressful situations without hesitation. When staffing shortages arise, Ashley is quick to jump in and help wherever she sees the need.

Ashley is a safe place to express concerns and does her best to help resolve any conflict that may arise. Ashley demonstrates exceptional compassion for her staff members and our veterans.  Ashley is a wonderful resource and mentor for her staff. Ashley's leadership style facilitates a very optimistic and effective nursing team for her unit. Ashley is the best manager I have had in my professional career and I am personally very grateful to have such wonderful management.

It is with great pleasure that I nominate Ms. Ashley Ashburn for consideration for the Nurse Leader DAISY Award.  Ashley is a role model for both compassion and exemplary practice for her fellow leaders and staff at the Lexington VAHCS.  She can quickly identify individual needs and act efficiently to provide recommendations for intervention and/or guidance to improve practice.

One recent example of this is her active involvement in a process change to improve communication between frontline nursing staff and mental health services for patients that are discharging, who have high-risk flags for suicidality.  Ashley is working with the nurse educators to train and ensure compliance of the nursing staff on completing suicide screenings correctly and notification of mental health services, to mitigate the risk of a Veteran committing suicide after discharging from the Lexington VAHCS.

Ashley exhibits outstanding job performance and responsibility while performing her many duties as the Nurse Manager of the 5th floor Telemetry Unit. She role models behaviors that are perceived as extraordinary and creates an environment of trust, compassion, and mutual respect as evidenced by her willingness to help others (staff, patients, patient family members), working overtime whenever the need is required, and acting as a team player, all while continuing to demonstrate a positive attitude along with professionalism.

Ashley consistently displays a high level of motivation and enthusiasm to achieve better outcomes for process improvements for staff and patients.  This is evident through her mentorship qualities, transparency, and accessibility to others. These qualities assist in empowering staff and encourage them to bring forward their ideas to problem-solve while using their critical thinking skills.  A recent example of Ashley’s enthusiasm to improve outcomes is through her work with the nurse educators on staff education and compliance with completing NEWS scoring for patients.  As a result, staff can use evidence-based practice to quickly identify and intervene for patients whose condition may be deteriorating.

Another example of Ashley’s motivation to role model compassion and care for patients and staff is through her joint work with voluntary services and social work for meal vouchers for patients’ loved ones and the development of a coffee bar area for staff, to improve patient and staff morale and satisfaction.

Under Ashley’s leadership, there have been many process changes at the unit level to improve patient care.  Ashley makes a difference at the Lexington VAHCS. She exemplifies the mission of the facility and service and positively impacts the staff on the 5th-floor telemetry unit. Her skills, knowledge, willingness to help others, and dedication to our facility are all examples of her excellence as a Nurse Leader.
