The box also included handwritten cards from Molly, Ashley, and Meaghan. I don’t know if they realize the impact that they had on us. For what were probably the worst days of our lives, the nurses mentioned made us feel empowered and gave us a sense of peace.
I was admitted to the hospital after finding out that our son no longer had a heartbeat at one of my ultrasound appointments. We were 24 weeks along in our pregnancy and we were devastated. From start to finish, the Labor and Delivery nurses at Bridgeport Hospital were nothing short of amazing. Our admitting nurse, Ashley, greeted us with compassion. She gave us the space and time we needed to settle into our room before she explained what would happen moving forward. She was with us for the first couple hours of our admission and made sure things moved at a pace we were comfortable with.
Our night nurse, Molly, was with us both nights of our admission. The first night, while I was laboring, she checked on us frequently and let us rest. Throughout the laboring process, many tasks had to be done, and Molly always explained things in a soft, calm voice, which helped us to stay calm as well.
Waking up, we met our day nurse, Meaghan. It was time for me to deliver our son. The things Meaghan did for us after delivery, I will never forget. She treated our son with respect and dignity. She put a diaper on him and wrapped him in a blanket. She told us how cute he was and how strong we were. She took photos for us and stamped his footprints. Our son stayed at our bedside for over 24 hours, and the time we got to spend with him we will cherish forever. We knew before being discharged, we would have to say our final goodbye, a moment we were dreading. Meaghan stayed by our sides throughout the most difficult experience we have ever been through.
When we were discharged, she walked us all the way to the hospital lobby and gave us each a hug. We went home with a beautiful memory box filled with pictures, footprints, and the blankets and hats that our son wore. The box also included handwritten cards from Molly, Ashley, and Meaghan. I don’t know if they realize the impact that they had on us. For what were probably the worst days of our lives, the nurses mentioned made us feel empowered and gave us a sense of peace. Being a nurse myself, I know how incredible healthcare workers are, but viewing these nurses from a patient’s perspective, I am so grateful for them and the care that we received during such a vulnerable time.
