June 2026 Honoree
Ashley Mulanax, RN
Ashley Mulanax provided exceptional, compassionate, and clinically outstanding care during one of the most intense and vulnerable experiences of my life. I was an emergency transfer from a midwife center and underwent an unexpected emergency C-section. The entire situation was overwhelming, fast-moving, and emotionally heavy.
From the moment Ashley stepped into my care in Labor & Delivery, she brought a steady, grounded presence that made me feel safe despite the chaos around me. During surgery and recovery, I experienced adverse effects that made the situation even more frightening. Ashley handled everything with confidence and calm expertise. She managed my care seamlessly while also taking the time to explain what was happening to both me and my daughter in a clear, no-fluff way that I deeply appreciated. She didn't sugarcoat the situation, but she communicated in a way that helped me understand the situation rather than scared me due to a lack of knowledge. That balance of honesty and reassurance is rare and invaluable.
What impacted me most, however, was the emotional care she provided. After an emergency birth that was nothing like the experience we had planned, my husband and I were left grieving the birth we didn't get to have. Ashley didn't dismiss that grief. She proactively talked with us about how it is okay to mourn the experience we had hoped for, even while being grateful for a healthy outcome. That validation meant more than I can fully express. She saw not just a patient recovering from surgery with a baby in the NICU, but two parents processing trauma.
Ashley went above and beyond her role in another remarkable way. Although she is technically a Labor & Delivery nurse, she requested to have me as her patient again the following day in the Mom & Baby unit. Knowing she wanted to continue caring for me brought an incredible sense of continuity, safety, and comfort during a vulnerable recovery period. Ashley exemplifies what nursing should be: clinically skilled, emotionally intelligent, honest, steady, and deeply compassionate. She changed what could have been a traumatic memory into one that also holds gratitude and dignity. My family will never forget the role she played in our daughter's birth story.
