The most important reason she deserves this award is because she talked to my son about how the colostomy was only temporary and did not change him as a person. She told him that it didn’t define him.
We had Nic on our 9th night in the hospital. My son had a major abdominal surgery that ended with a temporary colostomy bag and an open wound, hooked to a wound vac. From the moment she came on shift, she filled us with more knowledge and education on my son’s wound and colostomy than we received in the prior days. She walked us through emptying the colostomy bag while informing us why the steps were important. She held pressure on my son's bleeding wound for 30 minutes until the surgeon got here to put two more sutures in. The most important reason she deserves this award is because she talked to my son about how the colostomy was only temporary and did not change him as a person. She told him that it didn’t define him. At 20 years old, this was a lot for him to process. She helped ease his mind and made him realize that he was still the same person.
