May 2026 Honoree
Ashley Ruiz Tellez, RN
Some nurses do their job well, but every so often you encounter a nurse whose compassion, leadership, and dedication remind you exactly what the nursing profession was meant to be. Nurse Ashley BSN, RN, is one of those rare nurses.
In today's fast-paced healthcare environment, where nurses often carry tremendous responsibility and heavy workloads, Nurse Ashley stands out as a shining example of what true nursing care should look like. Her compassion, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to her patients reflect the very heart of the nursing profession.
It quickly became clear that Nurse Ashley is the type of nurse who elevates the entire care environment. Her calm presence, attentiveness, and genuine compassion positively influence not only her patients, but also the families and colleagues around her. From the moment she enters a room, her presence brings calm, reassurance, and trust.
Nurse Ashley does not simply perform the tasks required of her role; she offers her full attention, compassion, and commitment to every patient she cares for. Her therapeutic communication is exceptional. She takes the time to listen, explain, and ensure that patients feel heard, respected, and understood. It is evident that she sees each patient not simply as a diagnosis or task, but as a person deserving dignity, empathy, and advocacy.
One moment that truly demonstrated Nurse Ashley's extraordinary dedication occurred during a particularly difficult shift. One of the patients in our room was experiencing significant mental health distress and was repeatedly calling for staff every few minutes while also making false accusations toward members of the healthcare team. Despite the challenging and emotionally charged nature of the situation, Nurse Ashley responded every single time with patience, compassion, and professionalism.
She never appeared frustrated or dismissive. Instead, she immediately came to the bedside, spoke calmly, and used therapeutic communication to help de-escalate the patient's anxiety and restore a sense of safety and reassurance. Her ability to calm the patient while maintaining dignity and respect was truly remarkable.
What made this even more impressive was that despite the constant demands of this situation, Nurse Ashley continued to care for all of her other patients with exceptional organization and time management. I observed firsthand how difficult and demanding her shift was, yet she ensured that every patient received attentive and timely care. She never allowed the stress of the situation to compromise the quality of care she provided to anyone else. She remained present, attentive, and compassionate with each patient throughout the shift.
In addition to providing excellent bedside care, Nurse Ashley made sure that patients clearly understood their treatments and care plans. She took the time to explain interventions, educate patients about why certain care was being provided, and ensure that they felt comfortable and informed. Her approach empowered patients and helped them feel more confident and secure during their hospital stay.
Another moment that truly reflected her dedication occurred when I was waiting to speak with the physician regarding my mother's test results and plan of care. From the moment I arrived at the hospital that morning at approximately 6:50 a.m., Nurse Ashley made it a priority to ensure that I remained informed.
Even while managing a demanding workload, she continued to check whether the physician had contacted me and whether I had received the necessary information regarding my mother's results and treatment plan. She made sure that before discharge orders were carried out, the physician had spoken with me and that I clearly understood the plan of care for my mother.
This level of attentiveness meant so much because it showed that she truly values patient and family involvement in healthcare decisions. She did not allow the busyness of the unit to overlook the importance of clear communication and advocacy.
As a nurse myself, I understand the demands, pressures, and responsibilities that come with this profession. Observing Nurse Ashley during such a challenging shift made me incredibly proud of the profession we share. Her ability to balance compassion, clinical excellence, patient advocacy, and time management while maintaining genuine kindness toward every patient was truly inspiring.
It reminded me of the very reason many of us chose to enter nursing in the first place. Seeing the level of care she provides reaffirmed my belief in the profound impact that an exceptional nurse can have on patients and families.
Nurse Ashley represents the very best qualities of the nursing profession. She combines clinical excellence, leadership, compassion, and advocacy in a way that leaves a lasting impact on patients, families, and colleagues alike. Her composure, clinical judgment, and natural leadership reflect the kind of charge nurse presence that strengthens an entire team and reassures every patient under her care.
Without question, Nurse Ashley embodies the kind of nursing care that Florence Nightingale herself would be proud to see carried forward today. She demonstrates that extraordinary nursing is not only about clinical skill, but about compassion, patience, advocacy, and the ability to bring humanity into every moment of care.
Nurses like her remind us that the heart of healthcare is not just treatment, but the compassion and dedication that leave a lasting impact long after a patient leaves the hospital.
