Ashley Schurke is an outstanding Preop, PACU and GI nurse. She possesses a number of qualities and attributes that make her a true DAISY Nurse. First and foremost, she is patient and kind. She is a preceptor for new nurses in the department. She gives positive reinforcement when they are learning new tasks or procedures. If a co-worker at first does not succeed, she gives them the feedback and encouragement to make the essential adjustments. She is so thrilled when her orientee is successful at a newly learned task.
Second, Ashley's beaming smile and positive attitude are welcoming to all who come in contact with her. Patients, co-workers, and orientees have recognized her. She has received numerous CHI Health recognition cards, patient follow-up phone calls and "great work" cards for her excellent care and bedside manner. She has a passion for nursing that leaves a lasting impression.
Lastly, Ashley teaches by example. She can be found sitting eye to eye with patients giving discharge instructions, holding the hand of a worried loved one or finding humor in a stressful situation. It is a proud moment observing her interactions with patients in our department. She inspires not only her pupils, but her patients to be the best form of themselves by encouraging healthy habits, suggesting alternative therapies such as relaxation techniques and massage, and addressing concerns and fears.
We recently cared for a patient in our department needing apheresis. This was a new and complex procedure for our staff. Ashley did research and educated herself about apheresis. She read online and asked lab personnel and the American Red Cross nurses questions. She then assisted the Procedure Center supervisors with a standard operating procedure so that care for the patient could go smoothly and efficiently. Ashley is a great communicator and assisted with educating her coworkers about documentation and process for checking out units in the lab. This made a huge difference in the care of this patient. Ashley is a great role model and an exceptional educator.
