Sometimes the universe aligns perfectly to help someone in need, and that is exactly what happened when one of our regular infusion patients was assigned to Ashley's chair. This patient visits our unit monthly, so our team has come to know her well. On this particular day, however, it was clear that something was different. She seemed withdrawn and shared with the nursing staff that she had been feeling severely depressed. She expressed that she no longer did the things she once loved and was living with constant pain. Ashley took the time to truly listen. She gently asked the patient what used to bring her joy. The patient shared that she had always loved attending performances by the Philadelphia Ballet but had not gone in a long time. By what felt like perfect timing, Ashley had recently met someone who worked with the Philadelphia Ballet and had been offered tickets to attend a show. Without hesitation, Ashley invited the patient to join her at the ballet. Not only did they attend the performance together, but they were also given backstage passes, making the experience even more special. After the show, as Ashley walked the patient back to her apartment, the patient shared something remarkable: for the first time in a long time, she was not experiencing any pain. She had spent the day doing something she truly loved, and it had lifted her spirit in a way that medication alone never could. This moment perfectly embodies the heart of nursing. Ashley didn't just care for her patient's physical needs; she cared for her as a whole person. Through compassion, attentiveness, and a willingness to go above and beyond, Ashley helped create a truly meaningful and magical experience for someone who needed it most.
