Teamwork is one of our MLH core values. Teamwork in the provision of quality and compassionate patient care is seen in many activities - interdisciplinary teams working to provide care to a patient or patient population, collaboration in performance improvement, and assisting with staffing housewide. Like our other nursing units at Germantown, 4West associates have floated to other units to meet the Germantown patient care needs during a time of housewide staffing challenges. The contribution of all our departments has been seen and valued. However, it is in the magnitude and method of 4West’s teamwork commitment to our patients on which we focus this DAISY Team Award.
Last year, the associates of 4West provided 31% of all floated shifts in the hospital. In the first 3 months of 2022 that percentage increased to 38% (269 shifts.) Like other units, some of those floated shifts were done as staffing decisions were made with scheduled staff. In addition, the 4 West team scheduled, in advance, numerous associates on other units for several months. The team’s commitment to the patients and their nursing colleagues additionally resulted in last-minute recruiting for other units’ open shifts so that beds could remain open and patients could receive care. These actions have significantly limited the number of times in which patient assignments housewide would have been stretched. The need for preceptors in other departments has additionally resulted in the 4 West team floating to other nursing units to orient new associates in those departments.
Understanding that our patients are at the center of all we do, the actions of the 4 West team have resulted in quality and compassionate patient care to hundreds of patients outside of their department.
The DAISY Team Award is designed to honor collaboration by two or more people, led by a nurse, who identify and meet patient and/or patient family needs by going above and beyond. The 4 West team, led by their Clinical Director, Laurie Wilson, has gone above and beyond in providing patient care throughout the hospital and supporting their nursing services colleagues in the delivery of care.
