A dear family friend has been a patient on this floor many times throughout the year. Our friend has suffered and had many health issues because of his disease process. When a person struggles, their attitude and demeanor are not always pleasant, but this team always managed to bring out the best in him even when he was at his worst. This team has always shown great care and compassion to him and his family. We often joked that he would fake sick so he could see his "friends" at St Anthony's hospital. It gave great comfort to his family and loved ones to know that if they were not able to be with him, he never felt alone. As healthcare providers, we often ask our patients, “What is the matter?” but in his case, they seemed to ask, “What matters to you?” This can make all the difference in the world to a patient who may feel like they have little control over what is happening to them. This team treated him like one of their own and always made sure he had what he needed and that he felt supported. I received a call from his daughter a few days after he had been discharged. She said, “You will never believe who came to see my dad today!” Some of the team members had created such a bond with him that they came to visit him on their days off just to see how he was doing. During that visit, they shared with him that on the day he was discharged home, they had a little gathering after work to celebrate him. This was such a thoughtful gesture, and it really meant a great deal to him and his family. This team has gone above and beyond to make him feel loved and cared for in his darkest days. This is what I would call “Humanity at Work” and is precisely The BayCare Effect. We would like to thank this team for the extraordinary care and compassion they have shown to him and his family throughout his stay. The whole team deserves DAISY recognition.
