I want to let you know what a treasure we have in Audrey Thompson. This weekend we had a highly volatile patient. I gave him Audrey as a sitter because she is so wonderful with people and not naïve about safety. We came back on Saturday night to a different man. He apologized for what he said and did and was cooperative and respectful to us. She got his clothes out of the locker and took them to his room and hand-washed them for him, so he could have something clean to wear. Audrey looked past his actions and told him that the anger and aggression weren’t who he was. She told him he had a good heart and didn't have to live in anger. She taught him several techniques for dealing with his frustration and anger. When he told her he had nothing, she shared with him her story of losing everything and how it was possible to rise above our circumstances. Audrey told him he could be more and that he can always get more things. She gave him hope and dignity. She came in on her day off to help take care of him, simply because she told him she would. Audrey helped him trust us and completely changed his behavior towards us. I personally think she has magical powers. She also went into another room, where the patient was facing amputation, and spent about an hour-and-a-half with the patient encouraging her and just listening to her fears and concerns. Audrey is an amazing person who treats everyone like they are her family and friend, she looks past a patient's appearances and actions and sees their heart. She really is an amazing person. We took a vote and we all agree!
