Compassion is hard to teach; Avani leads by example. Her patients and co-workers are so lucky to work with her!
Avani was with my mom from the beginning of her stay in the ICU. Avani was so genuine and caring- from making sure that my mom was comfortable to making sure her personal care was up to par. When my mom is healthy, she is always looking her best, and Avani helped to make sure her hair was always braided and looking nice - something that I know would mean so much to my mom. Avani was always there to answer my (very many) questions and provide us with updates in a way that made sense. We are so incredibly grateful for her knowledge, kindness, and compassion!

I was admitted for a routine induction for my first child. By the morning, I was being wheeled to the OR for an emergency C-section. My baby ended up having minor respiratory issues and had to stay in the nursery for a few hours. By the time she was cleared to come to my room in maternity, it was almost 7 pm. I got to spend 45 minutes holding her before complications from HELLP syndrome made my vitals crash.
An RRT was called overhead, and I was wheeled to the ICU. I ended up needing another surgery that night to fix a hematoma, as well as needing 5 units of packed red cells, 1 unit of platelets, and multiple units of iron during my time in the ICU. I was the weakest physically I had ever been, in immense pain, and emotionally wrecked, being apart from my newborn. I would sit in my bed in the dark, looking at pictures and videos of her and crying. Avani was my angel. She was already giving me great patient care and checking in on me frequently, but then she went past “going above and beyond”. She found a way to get me a field trip up to the maternity unit to visit my baby. She saw a patient suffering and in need and found a way to make it better. She had another nurse watch her patients, and she wheeled me up in a wheelchair herself. She told me we had half an hour before we needed to go back to the ICU, and she stood outside the door the entire time while my husband and I silently cried as I held my daughter for the second time ever.
Avani came back in when our time was up, and upon seeing how emotional it was for us, she gave me a few more minutes. I had been receiving medicine, blood products, etc., but what Avani did healed something in my heart and soul. Taking me to my baby did nothing for her; if anything, it could have delayed her charting and other responsibilities, but she is such a compassionate person that she found a way to help me in a time I needed it most. I will never forget what she did for me and my new little family.

Avani always shows up to work with a positive attitude that impacts all the patients in a good way. Avani was the day shift nurse taking care of a patient with a very bad wound that caused her to be in considerable pain. As I came in to take over for the patient’s night shift nurse, the patient told me how Avani took her time to make her feel better by offering emotional support. This support helped the patient have a positive outlook on her stressful situation. Avani always shows compassion and empathy to the patients she takes care of. She is detailed in her assessments and is dedicated to providing the most competent care to everyone she takes care of. Avani is an example to new nurses of how a nurse should be.
