From the moment she answered, Avery was calm, reassuring, and deeply kind.
The first time I heard the word Cancer, my entire world stopped. I froze. My body tensed. I gulped, trying to process a word that suddenly held my future in its grip. I told myself there must be some mistake--but deep down, I knew the truth. The signs had been there: the mammogram, the MRI, the biopsy--all happening at lightning speed. Still, I had things to do. I was in the middle of moving from Hawai'i back home to Montana, starting a new job, and building a house. I didn't have time for cancer. I managed to get the surgery done in Hawai'i, and now I needed to find a Radiation Oncologist in Great Falls. When I called to begin the process, I was connected to Avery. I didn't know it at the time, but this one phone call would make everything easier and more hopeful. From the moment she answered, Avery was calm, reassuring, and deeply kind.
She made no promises, but she walked me through every step--getting my records sent over, navigating the system, and assuring me she would follow up as soon as possible.
Anyone who has faced a cancer diagnosis knows: you want things done fast. You want that cancer out. But you also want to feel seen, heard, and cared for--not as a diagnosis, but as a whole person. You need to trust the system to help carry you through an overwhelming process. Avery did just that. She called back quickly, as promised, listened to my worries, validated my fears, and smoothed the way forward. She coordinated with my Hawai'i team--who, by the way, told me, "You're in good hands with Avery." That was the moment I exhaled for the first time in weeks. I can do this. From there, everything moved seamlessly. I met with the exceptional Dr. U and encountered radiation technicians who were gentle, skilled, and thoughtful. But Avery was the glue that held it all together.
She is the rare nurse who combines unshakable professionalism with extraordinary compassion. Her attention to detail is matched only by the warmth she extends to those in her care. She advocated for me, offered emotional support, and anticipated my needs before I knew how to voice them. In a time of fear, chaos, and change, Avery was my anchor. She is not only a nurse--she is a navigator through a complex system. I am profoundly grateful that I had her in my corner, and your hospital is lucky to have her on your team. Avery embodies everything the DAISY Award stands for, and more.
