On a dark evening for him, I witnessed Bailey connecting and understanding him with sincere, genuine kindness.
D was a Vietnam Veteran, and you always knew where you stood in his world. He had this uncanny ability to look into one’s soul and decipher their sincerity. Bailey was a perfect match for him. She is the perfect definition of what nursing should be. I’ll never forget her. On a dark evening for him, I witnessed Bailey connecting and understanding him with sincere, genuine kindness. Knowing very well she had other patients to care for, she demonstrated so much tender patience. Unhurried. Knowledgeable with his meds to keep him comfortable, because she knew he wasn’t going to live much longer. She wasn’t short with him, and she listened as though he were her only patient. Our daughter and I knew he was in good hands with Bailey.

On this same evening, the image of them conversing is branded in my mind. He was so weak and reached for her. She bent down very closely to hear him speak. This is a much shorter version of what he quietly and sincerely told Bailey: I probably won’t see you again, so I want to thank you for all of your kindness and patience and for listening to me. I enjoyed our conversations. You’re a great nurse. I mean it! Please understand this was a huge compliment coming from him, because he never said anything he didn’t mean. I could see this really touched Bailey, but she remained composed, and we walked out of his room together. I began to sob, and she didn’t hesitate to hug me and ask if I was okay. Once again, MCMC, you have an Angel on staff. D was transferred to Hospice and passed away the next day. He knew he wasn’t going to see her again. He would want Bailey to receive this award. She is so deserving.
