I was in the operating room for the last 5 hours, so they say. I just got a liver transplant. Coming to, first I heard some noises around me but I was still under. Then the picture slowly started to shape up. Now I was in the intensive care unit and ICU nurse Barbara Youngblood was receiving me over from the surgical team. After the doctors left she started immediately to perform her chores and kept at it as I was slowly gaining consciousness. She was very comforting and told me how good the surgery had gone and I was doing very well at the moment. She asked me if I wanted anything. Due to anesthesia, my whole mouth was dry, I could not even speak just pointed at my lips then she knew. She went away and came back with a cup full of ice chips to moisten my mouth, water was not allowed. They were the best ice chips I ever tasted. As the day went by Barbara tirelessly spent time between me and ICU doctors giving reports and performing necessary procedures. Towards the afternoon I was feeling better and could carry a conversation with her. I told her that I was an international patient and was here away from my family staying with my sister. She was sympathetic to my condition and mentioned that she does like to travel and would like to visit Istanbul Turkey where I lived. Later or when I thought about that conversation I realized for a moment she took my mind off current things and helped me to look forward. She was very genuine and professional. After one day in the ICU, I was moved to a room to recover. The next afternoon the door opened and Barbara walked in. She wanted to just say hi and see how I was doing in the new unit. Furthermore, she presented me with a gift mug from Mayo Clinic which I will save and cherish. That is why I think she is a dedicated caring and passionate nurse who deserves recognition.
