She met one‑on‑one with faculty and staff, listening with intention and empathy, and offering calm, thoughtful guidance tailored to each person’s strengths.
Dr. Cherry is widely recognized for her extraordinary compassion, relational leadership, and commitment to the well‑being of others. Her return from retirement to serve as Interim Associate Dean and Department Chair for the Graduate Nursing Program came at a moment of organizational strain. Faculty and staff were experiencing burnout; morale was low, and an accreditation review loomed months away. Rather than approaching the role through the lens of crisis management, Dr. Cherry grounded her leadership in people-centered care.

From her first days back, she cultivated an environment where every individual felt valued and supported. She met one‑on‑one with faculty and staff, listening with intention and empathy, and offering calm, thoughtful guidance tailored to each person’s strengths. Her leadership is transformational. By forming collaborative teams, identifying and leveraging individual talents, and ensuring access to needed resources, she restored a sense of shared purpose while easing feelings of overwhelm and isolation.

Over the past year, Dr. Cherry has intentionally nurtured a culture where voices are welcomed, concerns are heard, and solutions are co‑created. Her emotional intelligence allows her to recognize when someone is struggling, often before they speak, and she responds with meaningful acts of care. Whether through personal check‑ins, thoughtful words of affirmation, or handwritten notes of gratitude, she offers encouragement that is specific, sincere, and impactful.

Dr. Cherry’s leadership has guided the program through a challenging period and reinvigorated a community, reminding everyone of the power of empathy, connection, and genuine human care.
