Barb patiently and encouragingly told my wife what medications she was administering, what was about to transpire when my wife needed reposting in bed, and in light-hearted, caring ways asked my wife what type of music she might enjoy hearing.
My wife was a patient at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN. During her stay, Barbara Greene and Debra Behselich demonstrated leadership, compassion, professionalism, and love for my wife that was nothing short of extraordinary. When Barb spoke to my wife, to me, and others in our family, you could hear the compassion for our situation in her voice. She was never haughty or acted as if she knew more about the process of dying than others. Instead, Barb patiently and encouragingly told my wife what medications she was administering, what was about to transpire when my wife needed reposting in bed, and in light-hearted, caring ways asked my wife what type of music she might enjoy hearing.

Deb is an exceptional collaborator, but you always knew she’s “the boss”. She took time on her shift to explain to me the stages of dying. Deb is one of the most experienced nurses there. Whenever I became frustrated or angry during the dying process, Deb would explain to me as many times as needed, always asking how I was, whether I was taking care of myself, how our family was doing, and more. Other nurses and staff have the utmost respect for Barb and Deb. They spoke highly of working with them and often deferred to their expertise on medications and how to help my wife feel most comfortable. Hospice nursing in a pandemic must be one of the hardest jobs emotionally on earth. I thank God every day that we have them and pray that they stay well.
