Barb demonstrated an innate ability to calm my fears with a soothing word, reassuring look, or timely joke to break my tension and put me at ease.
From someone who has had years of nursing care, Barb is the BEST. She showed concern in every way. Her skills are top-notch. She never felt I was a bother to her as she was always ready to meet my need. When I have to come in again, I would be honored to have her care for me again. Third-floor nursing is the greatest. She is part of what makes it so!

I was admitted to Mercy Joplin. I was experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath for the first time in my life. I was in pain for sure, but more frightened than anything else. Barb, with her unmatched knowledge and technical expertise, quickly did whatever was necessary to ease my pain. However, more than that, she demonstrated an innate ability to calm my fears with a soothing word, reassuring look, or timely joke to break my tension and put me at ease. I began to calm down every time I’d see her come through my room door. To me, Barb epitomizes both the spirit and essence of the DAISY Award.

A patient on 3MS completed her 6th and final round of chemotherapy provided on the inpatient units. On this date, Barbara Mammele RN had arranged for all inpatient coworkers and leaders to be present to allow the patient to experience the ringing of the bell, a tradition that normally occurs at the outpatient oncology clinic. Barbara got this patient a gift to present and thanked the patient for allowing us to help her with her journey. Tears were shed, it was very heart-warming for the coworkers and the patient. It is a rare occurrence that the inpatient chemo nurses get an opportunity to follow a patient from the start of their treatment to the end with such great outcomes. The patient became family to these nurses and was very pleased with her celebration and very pleased with her care. Barbara went the extra mile when she organized this, celebrating excellence through compassionate care and service by bringing to life the healing ministry of Jesus.
