The nursing team of Barnard 6 cared for a patient who had not seen a doctor in several years and presented to the hospital with multiple concerning medical and social issues. The patient was currently homeless and living in the woods. He had developed multiple wounds on his extremities that had not healed in over 6 months, and his skin continued to deteriorate. The wounds were extremely itchy and painful, and unfortunately, some had maggots crawling in them.

After a biopsy and debridement, it was determined that the wounds were a result of squamous cell carcinoma. He then had to have further testing and biopsies, including his lymph nodes. After an extensive workup with multiple specialists and a meticulous treatment and care plan, the patient was safely discharged to a local rehabilitation facility. What was significant about his stay was not just the medical care that this patient received but the compassion and empathy he received from the B6 clinical staff and his surgeons. When the patient initially arrived, the staff thoroughly cleaned him from head to toe without hesitation. The team did not just thoroughly clean the patient but spent extensive time de-matting his hair, giving him a fresh haircut, and shaving his facial hair, which had been unkept for some time. The patient spoke about how he previously used a bicycle as his only means of transportation, but his bike had since been stolen or missing for quite some time.

One of his compassionate surgeons, Dr Rodriguez, brought one of his own bikes from his home and donated it to this patient. Along with this the surgeons and the nursing team of B6 were able to donate clothing, shoes, personal hygiene items, and a backpack to the patient as well. As a result of the severity of his infection from the wounds, the patient was required to be discharged to a rehab facility and complete his antibiotic regimen. When the discharge transportation arrived at the nursing unit, they stated they could not take his bike. The unit manager stayed late when he could not take his bike and personally put the bike in her vehicle and drove it to the rehab facility to ensure the patient had his bike when he was discharged from rehab.

Even after the patient was discharged, the social worker coordinated a cell phone to be delivered to the rehabilitation center. This act of kindness was to ensure he was able to schedule and keep his follow-up appointments. Seeing the impact and transformation the team made on this patient – coming from homeless and living in the woods to leaving with not just proper medical treatment but also clothing essentials, a bike, a backpack, and a new appearance was remarkable. The Barnard 6 team truly delivered comprehensive care to this patient. The teamwork and compassion shown by the surgical team, physicians, nurse leaders, and the entire B6 team was truly inspirational and exemplary of humanity at work.
