Barrett Pritchard has an altruistic heart. I have had the pleasure of interacting with him on several occasions when he was caring for one of our patients and each time he has demonstrated exceptional nursing care that has been genuine and compassionate. In particular, I went to see a patient last week in the CV tower and while I was in the room with the patient and their family, they were insistent to tell me all the kind things Barrett had been doing to make sure the patient and family were cared for.
For example, Barrett stayed late after multiple shifts to ensure that the patient was comfortable and the family had all their questions answered before leaving; Barrett actually drew the anatomy of the kidney on a window to educate the family and patient on hemodialysis and how it works as the patient faced the choice on whether to start dialysis or not. The doctor had already been there and "explained" it to them but Barrett took it upon himself to make sure that they really understood it when he recognized that they still had questions...the family even accurately explained everything to me all because of Barrett took the time with them and educated them, allowing them to make the best-informed decision for the patient that improved their quality of life.
Barrett took the time to really get to know this patient and their family, leaving them in tears of joy as they were discharged home, so very grateful to him for the care and love he provided this patient and family. That's more than being a good nurse. That family will never ever forget the way that Barrett made them feel during their stay here at University. And how you make people feel is just as important as the knowledge you possess, both of which Barrett has set a great example.
