My wife and I recently had 29 week twin boys admitted to the NICU and we were amazed at the care and compassion exhibited by Barrie Fogle. As she has taken care of our boys, she has been totally self-less in not only the care of our boys but also in her interaction with us as parents. Her professionalism is evident in her knowledge and explanation of what is going on but more importantly she has a tender spirit that cannot be taught, it is simply inherent in her nature. Even when the NICU has been busy and/or Barrie is at the end of a long shift, she still treats our sons and us with a level of integrity and dignity that is second to none. We are comforted in this difficult time by knowing that our boys are in Barrie’s care and she is loving them in our absence. We feel that she is very deserving of this award and she is a great example for all in the Nursing profession.
I recently received a DAISY Award nomination from a family on behalf of Barrie Fogle, RN in the NICU. After reading what Barrie meant to this family during such a difficult time, I too reflected on what Barrie means to our unit. Barrie began working in our unit as a USC Leadership student several years back. Even as a leadership student, her positive approach to caring for patients was apparent. Barrie’s work ethic was one that stood out among the many leadership students we had experienced prior to her arrival. It was refreshing to see that Barrie took the initiative to learn and ask what many students before her had not asked. At the end of her leadership clinical, we asked Barrie to stay onboard with our Palmetto Health NICU family as a nurse tech knowing this was one we could not let get away.
As a new graduate, Barrie quickly excelled through orientation, mastering the skills necessary to be a great NICU nurse. However, it is what she brought to her position that you cannot teach which makes her such an outstanding candidate to receive the DAISY Award. Barrie is compassionate to our babies, as well as the families in their greatest time of need. There is no mistaking that the care she provides is proof of a nurse living the Palmetto Health vision. The greatest compliment I could give Barrie, as a mother of a NICU baby, would be that it would have been an honor to have her caring for my son when he was in the NICU. I know she provides the kind of care she would show her own baby.
