He made sure that the unit ran in order despite the high level of stress and he exuded a calm demeanor as well.
Sonny was our PCC/Charge Nurse one nightshift. Our shift already started very busy and chaotic but he became our anchor and glue that bound us together that night as manifested by the following situation(s):

After one of our patients came back from cath lab late in the evening, past visiting hours, Sonny coordinated with the House Supervisor so that the daughter could come to see the patient after her procedure easing our patient’s and her daughter’s anxieties that day.

Additionally, Sonny played a big role in helping one of the nurses with a very busy patient assignment. One of her patients complained of severe pain one day after he had a procedure, and required additional pain modalities. Sonny advocated for the patient and made sure the resident on call came to assess the patient. When the Resident on call came, examined, and assessed the patient, his pain regimen was adjusted and the patient was able to have a restful night. Sonny also was a big help when the same nurse had a patient scheduled for CABG who had a sudden change in condition that warranted transfer to ICU. Sonny coordinated and facilitated the transfer with the House Supervisor and the receiving unit’s PCC. Sonny started the prescribed Nitroglycerin drip while the Primary Nurse gave report to the receiving RN and delegated other RNs to transfer the patient to DH72(CVICU) before the patient’s condition deteriorated further.

Sonny was a major player and leader when some of the cardiac monitor boxes and massimo devices had data transmission issues resulting in us utilizing the transport/dash monitors on patients with high risk for cardiac arrhythmia. Sonny demonstrates exceptional leadership skills and excellent qualities as a nurse. He constantly checked on each of us that night to make sure that we were OK and he didn’t hesitate to help us when we needed it. He also made us feel valued, appreciated, and important that night which inspired us to work together as a team to help each other care for our patients’ needs that night. He made sure that the unit ran in order despite the high level of stress and he exuded a calm demeanor as well.

Sonny has a “sedative effect” whenever he is our PCC. He is indeed an important asset to DH44 and UCI Health is fortunate to have him as an employee. He exceeds the criteria set by this prestigious award bestowed on Nurses like him who always make a difference in our patients’ lives.
