The patient and her husband were very thankful Beata helped them understand their status.
Beata Mwizerwa noticed the patient was DNR/DNI, but the patient was young, in her 50s. It bothered Beata that the patient was DNR/DNI, and she didn't feel that it was right for the patient. The patient was healthy and had no previous medical history. She asked the patient if she wouldn't mind answering a question for her. Beata asked her if she was supposed to be DNR/DNI, and the patient stated that she was. The patient's husband said that he had been trying to get her to change her mind about her DNR/DNI status for a long time, but she wouldn’t. Beata asked the patient if she could explain to her what DNR/DNI meant. The patient stated that she had seen lots of codes and didn't want to go through CPR and people pounding on her chest. Beata explained to the patient that she was young, had no previous medical history, and that patients recovered from CPR and intubation. Beata told the patient that she could reevaluate her DNR/DNI status when she got older, like in her late 70s or 80s. After the conversation, the patient stated she no longer wanted to be DNR/DNI. The patient cried as she thanked Beata for talking to her about it and changing her mind. The patient was supposed to go in for a procedure in the OR that day. Beata called the physician, and the patient and her husband didn't want to go into surgery until her DNR/DNI was changed to full code status. The patient and her husband were very thankful Beata helped them understand their status.
