Beata was caring for a woman in labor and using her thorough assessment of the patient, discovered a newly diagnosed herpes lesion. Beata notified the providers involved and the patient was offered a cesarean section delivery in order to prevent spread of the virus to the newborn. The patient was educated on the risks of a vaginal delivery in this case, but felt that the risk of surgery was greater and refused. The patient delivered vaginally. The culture later returned positive for HSV, and the newborn was treated and closely monitored for any signs of infection. Due to Beata's great assessment skills and critical thinking, this mother and baby were given appropriate and safe care.
