She understood my fears and anxieties, acknowledged them, and helped make this time more positive.
Our Nurse, Beatrice "Betty" Thomas, was a sweet and kind soul who touched our hearts during our hospital stay. Although I am 16, Betty still treated me no differently than the other kids on the unit, giving me a coloring book, glitter crayons, and lots of stickers to keep me company and let me feel like a kid again. I was super happy to have received an activity pack (probably because of my age, I rarely get them), which I greatly appreciated and kept me company while waiting for scans and doctors. We met in my room, and I was visibly shaking and scared, but with her calming tone and reassurance, my dad and I understood everything that was going on, and my dad had peace of mind that I was going to be okay. Because of my history with needles, Betty wanted to do everything to make sure I was comfortable during the poke, getting me Buzzy the Bee, heat packs, and much more. She understood my fears and anxieties, acknowledged them, and helped make this time more positive. She took care of my dad as well, making sure he was warm, didn't have any questions, and wasn't hungry. When Nurse Betty found out that I wanted to be a nurse because of the care I received from nurses like her at CHLA, she decided to educate me on everything she was doing so that I could gain knowledge for my future studies. I learned a couple of things that night, and I was super thankful to have gotten first-hand experience, especially because I am so eager to learn. Although we only had a couple of hours with her as our nurse, we are so grateful to have met her that night and to have her as part of our care team. Thank you, Nurse Betty!
