She worked to honor the wishes of a patient whose advanced directives indicated that she did not want a feeding tube after it was recommended due to dysphagia after surgery. The patient was ultimately transitioned to comfort care.
On the day of discharge, Becky heard the patient was not doing well and nursing was concerned she was imminent. Becky went to see the patient and sat with her until she passed away and helped her to get comfortable in her final moments.
After speaking with the patient, she returned to the desk and said, “no one should die alone.” I feel that this embodies the message of the DAISY Award as well as WellSpan’s value of “Working as One.” Becky may not be at the bedside, but she does not hesitate to step in and assist.
