As a new graduate RN, I look at Becky as the kind of nurse this award was created for. I was surprised when I learned that she hadn't already received a DAISY Award, especially because on the night I learned this, she was staying late to admit a patient who was brought to the floor during shift change.
I have witnessed her go "above and beyond" numerous times in the name of quality care. Even though that night, the patient in question ended up transferring to another unit, she made the transfer herself. Becky completed his admission history, medication requirements and initial assessment, before calling report to his new nurse. What she didn't know at the time was that the patient's new nurse on the receiving unit was another recent graduate like me. Becky took the extra time to get the patient settled and where he needed to be, and as a result, my new graduate friend had a more manageable shift, and the patient's experience was centered on the idea of "continuity of care".
As nurses, our shifts are full of opportunities like this--small gestures that have a big impact. No matter how long I practice nursing, I hope to seek out these opportunities so that I can be the kind of nurse who makes a big impact---so I can be like Becky.
