My 89-year old father was moved to 3-West after treatment in ED, 2-T, OR and the ICU. He was post-op a total colectomy after profuse bleeding over three days. All the care he had received along the way was exemplary care. He was moved to 3 West in the morning and it was hectic there due to the influx of patients being transferred because of a hurricane hitting the GA coast. When Becky arrived for her shift that evening, he was still getting settled. Within the first fifteen minutes of her arrival in his room, she had identified and corrected several things. He was confused and disoriented. She spoke to him and to us with extreme kindness and compassion while working to change his O2 tubing to something more comfortable, changing a leaking ostomy bag that had been overlooked in the confusion, she got GI suction working properly, connected the circulation pumps on his legs that had not been reconnected just to name a few. I stayed with my father overnight and she continued to monitor him very frequently. During one of the brief times I actually was able to fall asleep he removed his NG tube, pulled out two IVs and was about to disturb the ostomy bag placement. I called and she was immediately in there working feverishly without any negativity. She was extremely kind to me and to him during this time. With the help of the charge nurse, order was restored. I was trained as an LPN many years ago and my husband is an RN. We were overwhelmed with her awareness and eye for detail while maintaining her humor and kindness. As I said, all the nursing staff we came in contact with were excellent but Becky will always stand out as having made my father's recovery easier for all of us. Her empathy and compassion were so profound that it would have been easy to overlook her phenomenal clinical skills. I hope she's still around if I ever need post-op care.
