We are all familiar with the tragic event that occurred in September of 2023, in which one of our own Lifespan nurses was brutally assaulted by a patient during his shift. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, healthcare workers have the highest rates of workplace violence injuries and are five times more likely to be injured than other workers. It is safe to say it is an extremely challenging time to work in healthcare, and this is especially true for our Behavioral Health team. 

When writing this nomination, I want to share a recent event that occurred on the Behavioral Health Unit to give others a glimpse of what it can be like to work as a behavioral health nurse. One night in March, a patient became symptomatic, which presented as anger toward staff. The patient attempted to enter the nurse’s station by violently punching and kicking the walls and windows, breaking the plexi glass of one of the doors. The staff worked closely with security to secure the nursing station and safety deescalate the patient. Thankfully, the patient was restrained, until his behavior was in control. This event was a display of the teamwork of the clinical and security teams. 

Despite the patient in crisis, it is important to highlight the outstanding care the team provided the additional fourteen patients on the unit. Security members arrived onto the unit and were able to safely manage the patient’s behavior. The teams worked together to provide safe treatment for the patient, as well as a safe environment for all other patients and the team. Members of both teams stayed past their shifts to offer support to each other and assist wherever needed. 

The supervisor could not thank the staff enough for looking out for each other and their patients. The unit leadership provided ongoing support throughout the whole night. This is just one example that demonstrates how the nursing team on the Behavioral Health Unit acts as role models for Lifespan’s shared values: compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence. It is what they do, without question or hesitation, every day. It is evident the team provides a safe and secure setting for patients to receive care for their mental health crisis. The Behavioral Health Unit deserves the DAISY Team Award as a testament to their teamwork and dedication to those suffering with mental health issues. All of us know or love someone who struggles with mental health illness, and we cannot thank you enough for the outstanding care you provide to those who need it most.
